STEVE EGGINGTON - CARTOONIST

Ol and Sal and inanimate clay friend

I am an amateur cartoonist based in Reading, England. Welcome to my humble site...

ABOUT ME

Lightly balding cartoonist Stephen D Eggleswick-Foxworthy peers sheepishly into his webcam, while a cartoon mole looks on

I'm not formally trained in art or design, but have been interested in cartoons and drawing since being given my first Peanuts book, aged four. When my horrified primary school teacher heard about my Snoopy-reading habits she asked my mum and dad if they'd actually heard of the library. I eventually started reading "proper" books, including the stories of Roald Dahl with their brilliant, anarchic illustrations by Quentin Blake. These drawings, as well as Gary Larson's The Far Side, soon inspired me to draw my own cartoon strips, featuring the characters Magnus Mole and Rocky the Walkman-listening bird. When I was 18 I failed in my bid to study a degree in animation (main problem: I couldn't draw "properly"), and so in 1999 I began working in TV. My cartooning habits fell by the wayside for a while, but during a period of frustration with my not-very-creative-or-exciting career in 2003 I began drawing again. Soon I was regularly sketching greetings cards for family and friends, posters for events, and a cartoon strip called Ol and Sal. The 'toons on this site mostly consist of the last five years of Ol and Sal strips - I hope you enjoy them more than I enjoy forcing myself out of bed to write down "hilarious" cartoony ideas which occur to me in the early hours of the morning.

THANKS TO:

Aidan for countless patient pointers to help me get all this on the web.
Friends, family, workmates, housemates and coursemates from north and south, past and present for providing my warped mind with inspiration... and not forgetting random strangers on the streets and public transport of Britain for their valuable input.
My CD collection and BBC 6 Music, because tunes make 'toons.
